My top ten pieces of art

1) Hello kitty motiff

Hello kitty is a fictional character produced by the Japanese company Sanrio, that was first designed by Yuko Shimizu. This character design has spread world wide, and has liscensing arrangements worth more than one billion US dollars annually. Some examples of Hello kitty products you can find are dolls, accessories, stationary, clothes, stickers, mugs and plates. The reason why I have chosen such a simple looking motif as my favourite piece of art is not only because I love the cute design of it, but also because of the popularity such a small thing has. There are so many people that collect everything hello kitty related, and spend a lot of money on these products. In my art history lesson in college, we once looked at how coke-a-cola was able to sell their product well by having santa claus in their adverts during Christmas, which made people want to buy them. Some people in class thought that this was quite a mean tactic, but I thought that it was quite clever. I also think that the way the company can make so much money just by putting the hello kitty motiff onto an everyday object is quite clever as well! I own quite a few hello kitty objects such as bows and accessories, and allways find myself contemplating bying other hello kitty things when I see them in stores. What I also love about it is that it's hard to beleive that such a cute, yet simple design has spread globally and is now even on airplanes!
